I have been looking at some old films about new towns. I am always fascinated by these films. Their unflinching optimism is striking. Was the hope matched by the reality? Probably not.
From 1948, this is Charley in New Town.
Even better is this beaming appraisal of newly-built Stevanage, made in 1959. I particularly love this line:
You will have already noticed how the rural look of Stevenage has been retained by leaving many of the original trees apparently growing out of the concrete.
