What a gem of a video this is. Associated-Rediffusion began life in 1955 as one of the country’s very first Independent Television stations. Here it is in 1967, having been rebranded as Rediffusion London. Here, it is within a year of being forced to merge with ATV to become Thames Television.
One of the things that interests me about this video is the mention of coverage of Wimbledon ’67 on ITV. I hadn’t thought about it before, but it came as a real surprise to learn that Wimbledon was covered, to some degree at least, by ITV.
The relationship between the All England Club and the BBC is said to be as tight as they come. At least, that’s what I have read time and again in explanations as to why Formula 1 was never going to escape lightly from BBC Sport cutbacks.
Wimbledon was still on the BBC as well in 1967. In fact, that is the year that Wimbledon became the UK’s first colour television broadcast on BBC Two.
